Jenny was enjoying herself on the swings when Azula, one of the guardians of the playground came to take her away.
Together they journey to a cinder building where Jenny must make a powerful decision.
I don't normally read short stories. I guess it's because I don't feel like I can connect with the characters in such a short amount of time. Mama Cried made me seriously rethink that stance.

With only 12 pages, you wouldn't think the characters could make much of an impact. The story starts out innocently enough, with some kids swinging at a playground. Soon it becomes clear that these aren't ordinary children, when you notice there are guardians keeping a watchful eye on them and that the dogs hanging around have red eyes .

When I first read the synopsis, I wasn't sure what type of "decision" Jenny would have to make. I only knew it would be something very difficult and probably hard to read about, and I was right. Maybe it's because I'm a mom, or maybe it's because I can't stand the thought of anyone hurting a child, but by the end I was sobbing loudly. The situation gripped me so hard and it was impossible not to put myself in Jenny's mother's shoes. I don't know if I'm alone in this, but there are so many horror stories about children being abducted or killed, I can't help but imagine if that happened to our family. It just became too real for me in my mind and I couldn't have stopped the tears if I had wanted to.

It was really hard to write this review; with only 12 pages of material to work from, pretty much anything I say is a spoiler. Even if you don't usually read short stories, I recommend you check out Mama Cried. It is a seriously emotional journey in a small package, and I am so glad I got a chance to read it.
