Comic Bento June 2015 Unboxing

Recently I was on Facebook and came across one of those "sponsored" ads. Sometimes they're super annoying and you can't imagine why anyone would want to buy what they're trying to sell or promote. This one happened to be something called Comic Bento and it works like pretty much any other subscription service these days; pay a very reasonable monthly fee (or pay yearly and save) and they send you a box of cool stuff. In this case, they send you comics! I was sold pretty much right away. I like the idea of getting random books, because I'm always looking for a new series I can get into. Every month has a theme and everyone who subscribes gets the same books.

This month the theme was Navigations Through Time. The box they come in looks like this:

Mine was in good shape, doesn't look like it got too beat up in transit. Inside the books are wrapped together in plastic with a sturdy piece of cardboard behind them to help keep them from getting bent (sorry, didn't get a pic of this, I was too excited to see what I got!) This month we got 4 different books and they all look pretty interesting.

Captain Midnight (Volume 1): On The Run

In the forties, he was an American hero, a daredevil fighter pilot, a technological genius... a superhero. Since he rifled out of the Bermuda Triangle and into the present day, Captain Midnight has been labeled a threat to homeland security. Can Captain Midnight survive in the modern world, with the US government on his heels and an old enemy out for revenge?! Collects Captain Midnight #1-#3, Captain Midnight #0, and the Captain Midnight Free Comic Book Day story.

Cost on Amazon: $12.70

Terminator: Revolution

The Terminator is back as Dynamite once again puts John Connor up against Skynet and the dark future as envisioned in the blockbuster films! Helmed again by writer Simon Furman, joined by artist Lui (Red Sonja) Antonio and cover artists Richard (Dark Tower) Isanove and Stjepan Sejic, Revolution tells a story set in the dark future of the Terminators and the present day where John Connor and his mother, Sarah, are on the run from the enemies sent against them from the future!

Cost on Amazon: $14.72

Captain America: Winter Soldier (Ultimate Collection)

A midnight call to duty brings Captain America aboard the S.H.I.E.L.D Heli-carrier to identify the corpse of his most feared adversary: the Red Skull! The shocking murder of Cap's oldest enemy may not be the end of the Skull's plans, however, because whoever shot the Skull has stolen his final project: an unfinished Cosmic Cube with the potential power to alter reality itself. Adding to the imminent danger, a cadre of the Skull's followers has already set in motion a plan to ignite bombs in the hearts of Paris, London and Manhattan - causing untold death and destruction. Racing against these bombs' rapidly ticking clocks, the Star-Spangled Avenger must not only solve the mystery of his nemesis' murder, but find the Cube before it can be used in the Red Skull's malevolent plot against the United States! Then, the questions plaguing Captain America's dreams and memories have been answered in the most brutal way possible. And in the wake of this brutality, General Lukin makes his first all-out assault - tearing open old wounds and threatening to make new scars that will never heal!
Collects Captain America #1-9 & #11-14.

The Valiant

A battle ten millennia in the making is about to begin... with an all-new, standalone volume from New York Times best-selling writers Jeff Lemire (Green Arrow, Animal Man) and Matt Kindt (RAI, Mind MGMT), and Eisner Award-winning artist Paolo Rivera (Daredevil)! The Eternal Warrior has protected the Earth for more than 10,000 years. A master of countless weapons and long forgotten martial arts, he is guided by the Geomancers - those who speak for the Earth. During his long watch, the Eternal Warrior has failed three times. Each time, the Geomancer was killed... and a new dark age for humanity began. Each time, he was unable to stop The Immortal Enemy - a monstrous force of nature. A civilization killer. A horror that appears differently each time it arrives... and whose seemingly only purpose is to bring disorder and darkness to the world. Now, the time has come for The Immortal Enemy to return once more. But, this time, the Eternal Warrior will be ready. This time, he has a force greater than any single warrior. This time, he has... THE VALIANT. An entirely self-contained, new reader friendly comics event spotlighting Bloodshot, Eternal Warrior, Geomancer, and a cast of heroes and villains from across the Valiant Universe, The Valiant is a visionary new adventure from three of the greatest creative talents in comics today. Collecting The Valiant #1-4.

Cost on Amazon: $9.16

So the contents of this months Comic Bento box come to a whopping $51.07, and I only paid $25 (actually more like $20 because I had a coupon for the first month). The monthly plan is $20 plus shipping, but if you sign up for 3 months or 6 months you save money. Not bad considering what I got was worth twice that. Plus I'm getting exposed to comics I might not have picked out on my own. I'm pretty happy with my first Comic Bento box and am very much looking forward to next month. The theme will be The Little Guy. If this sounds like something you want to get in on (and trust me, you do), then click here to go to the Comic Bento site to sign up!
